Big Mac Price, Calories & Nutrition (2026)
McDonald’s signature double-decker burger costs about $6 at most US restaurants and has 580 calories with 25 g of protein. Here is what you’ll pay for it and the meal, what’s inside, the full nutrition panel, and how it compares with the Quarter Pounder.
How Much Is a Big Mac?
The average Big Mac price in the US is $6.22, according to The Economist, and prices reported online in October 2026 mostly fall between about $5.90 and $6.75. Each franchisee sets its own menu prices, so the same sandwich can cost noticeably more in one town than the next.

*Prices are set by each restaurant. Prices shown are typical US prices reported online in October 2026, not prices from your restaurant; your local price can be higher or lower. “—” means we don’t have a reliable price yet. Nutrition: McDonald’s USA official data.

Why the Big Mac price differs by state and city
- Franchise pricing: most US McDonald’s are run by independent owners who set prices for their own market.
- Local costs: rent, wages and taxes push prices higher in big coastal cities than in small towns.
- Location type: airports, highway travel plazas and stadiums usually charge more.
- Delivery: McDonald’s says McDelivery prices may be higher than in the restaurant, before delivery fees.
The only way to see the exact Big Mac price at your restaurant is to choose it in the McDonald’s app, which shows the live menu and price.
How to get a lower Big Mac price
- Check the Deals tab in the McDonald’s app; offers that cut the Big Mac price rotate and vary by restaurant.
- Join MyMcDonald’s Rewards to earn points on app orders that you can trade for free food.
- Order the meal only if you want fries and a drink; a combo usually costs less than buying the three items separately.
- If you only want the taste, a McDouble with Big Mac sauce and shredded lettuce costs less (see customizing).
Big Mac Meal: Price, Sizes and Calories
A Big Mac Meal comes with medium World Famous Fries and a medium fountain drink, and it typically costs $9.29 to $11.79. With a medium Coca-Cola it adds up to 1,170 calories; choosing a zero-calorie drink brings it down to 900.
| Meal size | Fries | Drink | Total calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small meal | Small fries | Small Coca-Cola | 1,010 |
| Medium meal (standard) | Medium fries | Medium Coca-Cola | 1,170 |
| Large meal | Large fries | Large Coca-Cola | 1,440 |
| Medium meal, zero-calorie drink | Medium fries | Diet Coke, water or unsweetened iced tea | 900 |
Totals add McDonald’s current item data: Big Mac 580, fries 230/320/480 and Coca-Cola without ice 200/270/380 calories. McDonald’s meal description still quotes an older 1,080-calorie total.
Big Mac bundles and packs
Some restaurants sell shareable Big Mac bundles in the app, such as two Big Macs with fries or McNuggets. A “Classic Big Mac Pack” has been reported online at about $22, but bundle names, contents and prices change by restaurant and are often limited-time offers. Two Big Macs bought on their own cost about $12 to $14 at typical prices.
What’s on a Big Mac? Ingredients and Build
A Big Mac is a double-decker burger built from seven ingredients: a three-part sesame seed bun, two beef patties, Big Mac sauce, shredded lettuce, chopped onions, one slice of American cheese and pickles. The middle bun, called the club layer, is what sets it apart from other McDonald’s burgers.
| Layer | What it is | Allergen source |
|---|---|---|
| Top bun | Sesame seed bun crown | Wheat, sesame |
| Big Mac sauce | Creamy, tangy sauce on both layers | Egg, soy |
| Shredded lettuce | Crisp iceberg-style lettuce | None |
| Onions | Finely chopped onions | None |
| American cheese | One slice, on the bottom patty | Milk |
| Pickles | Dill pickle slices | None |
| Beef patties | Two 100% beef patties, seasoned with salt and pepper | None |
| Club layer | The middle slice of bun that splits the two decks | Wheat |
| Bottom bun | Toasted heel of the bun | Wheat |
Components are grouped for clarity, not listed in exact stacking order. McDonald’s says the Big Mac has no artificial flavors, preservatives or added colors from artificial sources, except the pickle, which contains an artificial preservative. Allergen sources are our reading of McDonald’s ingredient list; the full sandwich contains wheat, sesame, egg, soy and milk.
What is Big Mac sauce?
Big Mac sauce is McDonald’s own “special sauce”, similar to Thousand Island dressing. In a 2012 video, McDonald’s executive chef showed a home version made with mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish and yellow mustard, seasoned with vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. In 2018 McDonald’s removed the artificial preservatives potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate and calcium disodium EDTA from the sauce. The sauce is why a Big Mac contains egg and soy.

| Big Mac + medium fries | 900 | 30 g | 1,320 mg |
| Big Mac + large fries | 1,060 | 32 g | 1,460 mg |
Big Mac Allergens
The Big Mac contains five of the nine major food allergens: wheat, sesame, egg, soy and milk. It does not list peanuts, tree nuts, fish or shellfish, but McDonald’s kitchens share equipment, so cross-contact is possible.
Can it be made dairy-free?
Ask for no cheese. The sauce and bun still need checking for your needs, so confirm with the restaurant.
Can it be made egg-free?
Skipping the Big Mac sauce removes the main egg source. The burger will taste closer to a plain double hamburger.
Gluten and sesame
There is no gluten-free bun at US McDonald’s, and the sesame is baked into the bun, so neither can be removed.
Big Mac vs Quarter Pounder vs McDouble
The Quarter Pounder with Cheese has more beef and more protein (30 g) than the Big Mac, with 60 fewer calories. The Big Mac wins on sauce and toppings, while the McDouble gives you two patties for less money.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big Mac | 580 | 25 g | 34 g | 1,060 mg | $6.72 | $0.27 |

Big Mac History: From Uniontown to Worldwide
The Big Mac was invented by a McDonald’s franchisee, not by headquarters. Jim Delligatti wanted a bigger burger for hungry customers and borrowed the double-decker idea from the Big Boy chain.
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1967 | Franchisee Jim Delligatti sells the first Big Mac on April 22 at his McDonald’s in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, for 45 cents. Early names included the Aristocrat and the Blue Ribbon Burger. |
| 1968 | The Big Mac goes on sale at McDonald’s restaurants across the US. The name came from Esther Glickstein Rose, an advertising secretary at McDonald’s. |
| 1974 | A TV jingle listing every ingredient makes the recipe famous. |
| 1986 | The Economist launches the Big Mac Index. |
| 2007 | The Big Mac Museum opens in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. |
| 2016 | Jim Delligatti dies at 98. |
| 2018 | McDonald’s removes artificial preservatives from Big Mac sauce. |
| 2024 | The Chicken Big Mac debuts in the US for a limited time. |
What is the Big Mac Index?
The Big Mac Index is The Economist’s lighthearted test of purchasing power parity: if exchange rates were “fair”, a Big Mac would cost the same everywhere once converted into dollars. Because the burger is made the same way in almost every country, comparing its price shows which currencies look over- or undervalued. The US Big Mac price in the index rose from $6.01 in July 2025 to $6.12 in January 2026 and $6.22 in July 2026.
How to Customize Your Big Mac
You can change almost any part of a Big Mac in the McDonald’s app or at the counter. Extra ingredients may cost more, and what’s possible depends on the restaurant.
- Skip the middle bun. Removing the club layer cuts some carbs and makes the burger easier to eat.
- Add extra sauce or extra pickles. Both are common requests and usually free or cheap.
- Go without pickles. They are the only Big Mac ingredient with an artificial preservative.
- Add bacon. Bacon is a paid add-on at many restaurants and gives the Big Mac a smoky edge.
- Build a “budget Big Mac”. Order a McDouble with no ketchup or mustard and add Big Mac sauce and shredded lettuce, if your restaurant offers them as extras.
Big Mac FAQ
Can you get a Big Mac at breakfast?
Usually not. Most US McDonald's serve only the breakfast menu until 10:30 or 11 a.m., then switch to lunch items such as the Big Mac. See our McDonald's breakfast menu for morning options.
Is the Big Mac part of McDonald's MONOPOLY 2026?
Yes. The Big Mac is one of the eligible items for McDonald's MONOPOLY, which runs from October 6 to November 1, 2026.
How much are two Big Macs?
At a typical Big Mac price, two cost about $12 to $14. Check the app's Deals tab first, because two-for offers on Big Macs come and go.
Is a Big Mac bigger than a Quarter Pounder?
It's taller, but it has less beef. A Big Mac uses two smaller patties, while the Quarter Pounder's single patty weighs a quarter pound before cooking.
Does a Big Mac have ketchup or mustard?
No. A Big Mac has no ketchup or mustard; its only condiment is Big Mac sauce, which itself contains mustard.
Is the Big Mac sauce sold in bottles?
Not as a regular US menu item. McDonald's has offered bottled Big Mac sauce only in limited promotions and in some other countries, so most people ask for extra sauce on the burger instead.
