The McFlurry isn’t on the Under $3 menu, but it is a regular reward in MyMcDonald’s Rewards, and the app sometimes runs dessert deals. Delivery orders cost more and can arrive partly melted.
McFlurry Flavors Available Now
US McDonald’s sells two McFlurry flavors year-round: OREO and M&M’S. The OREO Shamrock McFlurry returns each February for St. Patrick’s Day, and McDonald’s usually adds one limited-time flavor in summer.

McFlurry Calories and Sugar
A Regular McFlurry with OREO Cookies has 410 calories and 48 g of sugar, 39 g of it added. The M&M’S version is richer at 570 calories and 74 g of sugar (62 g added), more added sugar than the recommended limit for a whole day.

The OREO McFlurry is the lighter choice: 160 fewer calories and 23 g less added sugar than M&M’S. Ordering the Snack Size cuts any McFlurry roughly in half. McDonald’s soft serve is reduced-fat ice cream, which is why a McFlurry has less fat than most premium ice cream treats despite the sugar.

What’s in a McFlurry and How It’s Made
Every McFlurry starts with McDonald’s vanilla reduced-fat soft serve, made from milk, sugar, cream, corn syrup and natural flavor, with small amounts of stabilizers. The topping is folded in at the machine with the McFlurry’s hollow spoon.

The long spoon isn’t just for eating. Its hollow handle clips onto the spindle of the McFlurry mixer, which spins it to blend the topping through the soft serve, then the crew hands you the cup with the spoon still in it.
McFlurry Allergens
Both McFlurry flavors contain milk and soy. The OREO version also contains wheat, from the cookie pieces, so it isn’t gluten-free. The M&M’S version has no wheat ingredients.

Toppings are handled at the same station and the mixer spindle is shared, so cross-contact between flavors is likely. Candy brands may also be made on equipment that handles peanuts or tree nuts. Ask your restaurant before ordering for a severe allergy.
Why Is the McDonald’s Ice Cream Machine Always Broken?
Usually it isn’t broken but cleaning. McDonald’s soft-serve machines run a nightly heat-treatment cycle that can take up to four hours, and if it fails or is interrupted, the machine locks until it’s fixed or the cycle is rerun.
- Timing matters: the cleaning cycle is often scheduled overnight or late evening, which is why late-night McFlurry runs fail most often.
- Repairs were restricted: until October 2024, US copyright rules limited third-party repairs of these machines. A new exemption now lets restaurants use independent repair services.
- Check before you go: the McDonald’s app usually marks desserts unavailable when a restaurant’s machine is down, so check it before you drive over.
McFlurry History and Past Flavors
The McFlurry began in Canada in 1995 and reached US McDonald’s by 1997. Of the five flavors that launched in the US, only OREO and M&M’S are still on the menu.

Not in the US right now. Kit Kat appeared in the 2024 Kit Kat Banana Split McFlurry, and other candy flavors have been limited-time only.
