McRib: Is It Back? Price, Calories & 2026 Return Dates
The McRib is McDonald’s boneless pork sandwich in tangy barbecue sauce with slivered onions and pickles on a homestyle roll. It has never been a permanent menu item in the US: it appears for a few weeks, usually in late fall, then disappears again. Here’s its status right now, what it costs, its calories and the full history of its returns.
Is the McRib Back in 2026?
Not yet,. The McRib isn’t on McDonald’s US national menu, and McDonald’s describes it as a limited-availability item. Reports from news outlets and the fan-run McRib Locator point to a regional return at participating restaurants around November 1 to 2, 2026, for roughly four weeks.
| Question | What we know |
|---|---|
| On the national menu now? | No |
| Expected return | Around November 1 to 2, 2026, at participating restaurants (reported, not confirmed by McDonald’s nationally) |
| Nationwide? | Unlikely. Reports say some regions, including much of New England, are opting out |
| How long? | About four weeks, through late November, based on reports |
| Best way to confirm | Check the McDonald’s app for your restaurant once November starts |
We update this status as McDonald’s confirms details. Dates come from reports published in September and October 2026.
How Much Does a McRib Cost?
McDonald’s doesn’t set a national McRib price; each participating restaurant prices it when it returns. Because it isn’t on sale yet, any exact 2026 price you see online is a guess. Past competitor listings showing a fixed McRib price are out of date.
| Order | Expected price | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| McRib sandwich | Set by each restaurant | App price after it returns |
| McRib Meal (medium fries, medium drink) | Sandwich + meal upcharge | App or kiosk |
| Two McRibs | Look for app deals | Deals tab during the run |
Past runs often came with app offers. For current deals on permanent items, see our value menu guide.
What’s in a McRib?
A McRib has five parts: a boneless pork patty shaped like a rack of ribs, McRib barbecue sauce, slivered onions, dill pickle slices and a toasted homestyle roll. There are no actual rib bones; the patty is made mostly from ground pork shoulder.
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Pork patty | Pork, water, salt, dextrose and rosemary extract, pressed into a rib shape |
| McRib sauce | Tangy barbecue sauce with tomato paste, vinegar, molasses and natural smoke flavor |
| Toppings | Slivered onions and dill pickles |
| Roll | Homestyle roll made with corn meal, toasted |
The rib-shaped patty comes from a restructured-meat process developed with US Army research. Meat scientist Roger Mandigo refined the method that made the McRib possible.

McRib Return History
The McRib has come and gone more than almost any other fast-food item.
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1981 | Introduced in the US, first tested in Kansas City |
| 1985 | Removed after weak sales |
| 1989 to 2005 | Back on many menus; McDonald’s holds a “Farewell Tour” in 2005 |
| 2010 | Six-week nationwide run from November 2, the first national US release since 1994 |
| 2012 | Nationwide run from December 17, then no national release until 2020 |
| 2020 and 2021 | Nationwide returns, including a 40th-anniversary run in 2021 |
| 2022 | Another “Farewell Tour” from October 31 to November 20 |
| 2025 | Regional US return announced November 11 in cities including Miami, Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles |
| 2026 | Regional return expected around November 1 to 2 at participating restaurants (reported) |

Why Does the McRib Come and Go?
There’s no official single reason, but three explanations are widely cited.
- Scarcity marketing. A short run creates urgency and news coverage that a permanent item never gets.
- Pork prices. Analysts have long noted that returns tend to line up with periods when pork is cheaper.
- Kitchen space. The McRib needs its own patty, sauce and roll, so a limited run avoids a permanent spot on a crowded menu.
How to Find a McRib Near You
Because participation varies by restaurant, a quick check saves a wasted trip.
- Open the McDonald’s app and set your restaurant; if the McRib is available there, it appears on the menu.
- Try nearby restaurants. Franchisees opt in individually, so the next town over may have it.
- Use the McRib Locator. The fan-run site maps restaurants where customers have reported seeing it.
- Call ahead during the first week, when supply can be uneven.
